Concert offers fusion of Navajo melodies, jazz, funk

Kahilu Theatre in Waimea will host a one-of-a-kind concert featuring the Delbert Anderson Quartet at 7 p.m. on Friday.

The ensemble, led by Navajo (Diné) trumpeter Delbert Anderson, fuses traditional Navajo melodies with jazz, funk and world music, “offering an innovative and captivating experience for music lovers,” according to a press release.

Anderson, known for his deep-rooted connection to his Navajo heritage, has gained recognition for blending ancestral music with contemporary jazz to create a sound that transcends cultural boundaries. The quartet’s performance will feature original compositions “alongside thrilling improvisations that highlight their virtuosity and unique style.”

“We are excited to welcome the Delbert Anderson Quartet to Kahilu Theatre for what promises to be a truly exceptional night of music,” said Jody Brotman, Kahilu executive director, in the press release. “Their ability to fuse traditional Navajo music with modern jazz is both inspiring and groundbreaking.”

This concert will be a fantastic evening for fans of jazz, world music and innovativeperformances. Tickets are available now and range from $24 to $76.
